A large data center site may contribute to local heat through:

- Large paved surfaces
- Loss of trees or vegetation
- Heat from transformers and substations
- Backup generator operation
- Reduced soil and canopy cooling
- Concentrated industrial development over time
Why Local Heat Matters
Even small local temperature increases can matter during summer heat waves.
Nearby residents may experience:
- Hotter nighttime conditions
- More heat radiating from pavement and buildings
- Higher cooling costs
- Stress on elderly residents and people with health conditions
- Less comfortable outdoor spaces
- Additional strain during power outages or grid emergencies
Questions the Community Should Ask
- How much waste heat will the facility reject at full load?
- Where will that heat be released?
- Has the developer modeled local heat effects?
- Will the site remove mature trees or natural vegetation?
- How much impervious surface will be added?
- Will there be green buffers, tree canopy, or reflective materials?
- Will backup generators add heat during outages or testing?
- Has cumulative heat from future phases been modeled?
- Will nearby homes be protected with setbacks and vegetative screening?
Protections That Should Be Required
Before approval, officials should require:
- Full-buildout heat-impact review
- Tree-canopy preservation plan
- Vegetative buffer requirements
- Limits on unnecessary pavement
- Stormwater and cooling-landscape design
- Reflective or low-heat building materials where practical
- Screening of mechanical equipment
- Setbacks from nearby homes
- Public disclosure of heat-rejection assumptions
The Core Demand
The community should not be asked to accept a major industrial heat source without understanding how it affects nearby homes, farms, roads, vegetation, stormwater, and summer living conditions.
Heat impacts should be studied before approval, not explained away afterward.
